In October of this year, while bringing his trash cans in near a curb at his house in Oregon, he accidently stepped off the curb in between the street, which was under construction, and fractured the faulty leg he had been born with. He said that he had pondered having his leg amputated since he believed it would allow him to walk pain-free for the first time.
Martin had successful surgery to amputate his right leg in the months following October 2021. According to the physicians, the procedure went well enough that he would be able to utilise a prosthetic in the near future.
In the meanwhile, Jeff Quinney, an assistant coach at Oregon who was a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, will take over for Martin until he heals.
