Matthew Eappen died when he was eight months old. He had been born prematurely. Louise Woodward was the au pair that was recruited by Eappen. She is originally from England and has relocated to the United States in order to make a life.

In late January 1997, she was served with an injunction from the Eappens to better her situation. The next day, on February 4, 1997, Louise phoned the police to inform them that Baby Matthew was experiencing breathing difficulties.

However, the Chief Prosecutor in the case, Gerard Leone, Jr., argued that Louise responded aggressively with the baby because she was irritated and frustrated by the ultimatum, which she was carrying within her.

The infant was reportedly shaken and thrown to the floor and bed by Louise, causing him to die. Louise was arrested.
